Ayesha Thapa (Elsha)

Elsha began her career as a fashion designer in Mumbai, India. During her time in India and Nepal, she taught, participated in fashion shows, styled magazine covers, and ran her own business. She encountered the world of Visual Arts at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia. Her desire to create something original and different prompted her to explore the idea of creating kinetic art while studying at OCAD University, Toronto, Canada. A number of prototypes of kinetic sculptures have been developed by her research, and she continues to develop different forms of kinetic sculpture.

My passion for creating new things has led me to build a series of prototypes of kinetic sculptures, and this is only the beginning. As I prepare to embark on this journey, I am determined to exploit as many potential opportunities as possible and create more prototypes. With adequate research and development, I intend to achieve my goal of efficiently creating some fine sculptures.
Reducing our carbon footprint is of paramount importance in today’s world and that’s precisely the reason I have resolved to upcycle discarded materials to create something fascinating. Furthermore, through my work, I intend to change the way waste is perceived.
I have worked with materials like file paper, plastic containers, and plastic styrene sheets and I am aware of their limitations. So, this time I wish to explore wood and metal as they can better endure the weather. I also intend to explore the possibility of incorporating 3D digital technology into my sculpture.
At present, the sculpture is interactive, requiring the pull and release of a string attached to it to open and close. And I feel that adding a mechanism to the structure will allow it to open and close gracefully on its own, which is what I have envisioned. There are countless ways to incorporate the design into a garment, an accessory, an indoor or outdoor art piece, etc. My excitement comes from the various topics I will work on and the different compositions I will create in the future.
